Types of Sports Bets

The same small set of structures appears again and again across football, racing, tennis and other sports.

Single

One selection. The bet wins or loses according to that market's settlement rules.

Double, treble and accumulator

Two, three or more selections combined. All required selections generally need to win for the multiple to win.

Moneyline / match winner / 1X2

Bet on the event winner. Football often uses 1X2 because a draw is a third possible match result.

Totals

Bet over or under a quoted number, such as Over 2.5 match goals.

Handicap

A notional advantage or disadvantage is applied for settlement purposes. Handicap rules differ by market, so read the line carefully.

Both Teams to Score

A football market settled on whether both teams score at least once.

Player and event props

Markets on specific occurrences, such as a player to score, number of cards or shots. Settlement can depend heavily on the bookmaker's participation rules.

Complexity is not an advantage. A market having more moving parts does not make it more profitable or predictable.
