An each-way bet is really two bets of equal size: one on the selection to win and one on it to place under the bookmaker's published place terms.

The stake is doubled
A £5 each-way bet costs £10 in total: £5 on the win part and £5 on the place part.
Place terms
The bookmaker states how many places qualify and what fraction of the win odds is paid on the place portion, such as 1/4 or 1/5. These terms can vary by race and promotion.
If the selection wins
Both the win and place parts win. If it only places, the win part loses and the place part can still win.
Non-runners and deductions
Racing rules can include Rule 4 deductions, non-runner treatment, dead heats and changing place terms. Always check the race-specific rules.
