Before you press withdraw

Most of the problems we hear about start before the request is made. A few minutes on these points saves days later:

• Is any of your balance bonus money? If a bonus is still being wagered, the bonus part and its winnings usually can't be withdrawn. Some sites cancel the bonus when you request a withdrawal. Check which balance you're looking at.
• Is your account verified? UK-licensed operators should have confirmed your identity before you could gamble. If the site still shows a verification banner, deal with it first.
• Which method will it go back to? Many operators send money back to the method you deposited with, to prevent fraud. If you deposited by debit card and an e-wallet, you may get it back split between them.
• Is there a minimum? Small balances under the stated minimum can't be withdrawn until you top up or win.

Reading the status screen

Most cashier pages use a handful of labels. They don't mean the same thing everywhere, but roughly:

• Pending: the request is waiting for the operator. At some sites you can cancel it during this stage. Cancelling puts the money back in your balance, which is exactly where impulse play happens.
• Processing or in review: someone, or an automated check, is looking at it. This is where identity, payment-method and bonus checks happen.
• Approved or sent: the operator has released it. From here, timing depends on your bank or payment provider.
• Rejected or cancelled: there should be a reason. If there isn't, ask for one in writing.

Turn off reverse withdrawals if you can

Some sites let you reverse a pending withdrawal and keep playing with it. If yours offers a setting to lock or "flush" withdrawals so they can't be reversed, switch it on. If it doesn't, ask support whether it can be done for your account. It removes the temptation to cancel a payout after a bad session.

If something goes wrong

1. Note the date, amount, method and any reference shown on the cashier page.
2. Ask support what stage it is at and what, specifically, is needed to move it on. Live chat is quick, but follow up by email so there's a record.
3. If the operator's answer doesn't resolve it, use its formal complaints process. UK operators must have one.
4. If you're still not satisfied after the complaints process, the operator's terms will name an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) provider. The Gambling Commission itself doesn't resolve individual disputes, but it wants to hear about operators that break its rules.

Before your first withdrawal: a checklist

• Verification is complete, and you've had confirmation, not just an upload screen.
• Any bonus you accepted is either fully wagered or forfeited, so the balance isn't locked.
• You're withdrawing to the method you deposited with, or you know the operator's rule if that isn't possible.
• The amount is within the minimum and maximum the cashier shows.

Getting these right removes most of the reasons a withdrawal sits waiting. The UKGC has said it expects operators to deal with withdrawals fairly and not to put obstacles in the way of customers who want their money.

Reversing a withdrawal

Some sites let you cancel a pending withdrawal and put the money back into your balance. If you know that temptation, ask whether the operator lets you turn the option off, and think about using deposit limits or a time-out at the same time.
